When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Are you breasts sagging and deflated? Has the shape of your breasts slowly been killing your confidence? And, if so, what can you do about it?
Now, you may be thinking: Easy! I’ll just get a “boob job,” right?
Maybe!
But while that can certainly be a great solution to your problems, there are many things to consider, too – like what type of surgical procedure is best to address your specific concerns and achieve the results you want.
So which “boob job” is right for you?
Breast lift and breast augmentation surgery are two popular procedures that can help you restore a more youthful silhouette and boost your confidence tenfold. And we offer these procedures – and many more – right here at our Fort Lauderdale office!
If you are considering breast surgery, take some time to understand what can be accomplished with each approach, and which procedure is best for you. Next, make sure you schedule an appointment with Dr. Lisa Learn, our board-certified plastic surgeon. She will discuss with you what each procedure entails and what to expect from each of them.
Do You Need a Breast Lift?
Breast lift surgery is designed for women whose breasts have lost their elasticity over time. This often causes the breasts to deflate, producing an overall droopy appearance.
Loss of elasticity happens for many reasons. Maybe your breasts started “giving out” after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Maybe they started sagging after you finally shed those extra pounds, or maybe it has something to do with your genetic makeup or your age. No matter what caused it, a breast lift can elevate your breasts to their natural position by removing excess skin, tightening the surrounding tissue and repositioning the nipple.
The ultimate goal of a breast lift surgery is to attain a firmer, younger-looking shape that is proportionate to the rest of your body. Sometimes, this procedure is also used to reduce the size of the areola or pigmented skin surrounding the nipple.
Still not sure if you need a breast lift? Try this simple test: Place a pencil as high as you can under the breast fold. If the pencil stays there, then you have signs of breast drooping. Now, if your nipple falls below the pencil, then you have significant drooping and a breast lift is just what you need.
Let’s do a quick recap. If:
- You want to correct breast sagging
- Your nipples and areolas are pointing downward
- You want to reduce the size of your areolas
… then you are likely a great candidate for a breast lift!
Do You Need a Breast Augmentation?
On the other hand, breast augmentation surgery is used to enhance breast size and address a variety of cosmetic concerns to help you look and feel your best.
You may be struggling with decreased breast volume after pregnancy or weight loss. Or perhaps you wish to correct any appearance of unevenness or make your breasts more proportionately balanced with your hips. Either way, a breast augmentation surgery can get you there through the use of implants, increasing the fullness of your breasts.
A breast augmentation may be just what you need if:
- You want to increase your breast size
- You have asymmetrical breasts
- You want more attractive cleavage
- You want rounder, more shapely breasts
- You want to restore lost volume
You should keep in mind, though, that while a breast augmentation may provide a subtle lift by filling the breasts and projecting them forward, this procedure alone does not correct excessive sagging. So if the nipple is lower than the beginning of the mammary fold, a lift should be considered instead of, or in conjunction with, an augmentation.
Which brings us to our next point …
Why Not Both?
The difference between these two approaches is clear: a breast augmentation focuses on the size and shape of the breast and will improve drooping breasts, depending on the size of the implant, while a breast lift focuses primarily on breast position and will not increase your cup size.
But what if your breasts are sagging and you would like to give them a little “boost”?
Well, you might not have to choose between the two after all! In fact, often a breast lift is done in conjunction with a breast augmentation so that the breasts can be restored to a more youthful position and volume can be increased by adding the use of implants.
The only way to determine which procedure will work best to achieve your goals – whether it be a lift, augmentation, or both – is by having a board-certified plastic surgeon, like Dr. Learn, evaluate your situation.
